How to use the Random Group Maker for balanced teams

The Random Group Maker shuffles participants and distributes them across the number of groups you choose. Group sizes stay as even as possible, which makes it useful for breakout rooms, workshops, project teams, and games.

Random grouping balances headcount, not skills or personal constraints. Treat the generated teams as a neutral starting point and make transparent adjustments when accessibility, experience, conflicts, or facilitator roles matter.

Why use this tool?

  • Builds multiple groups in one click.
  • Keeps team sizes within one participant of each other.
  • Avoids hand-picking patterns and repeated social clusters.

Common use cases

  • Creating workshop or video-call breakout groups.
  • Splitting students into activity or discussion teams.
  • Making casual project, game, practice, or lunch groups.

How groups are balanced

The list is shuffled first, then participants are dealt across groups in sequence. As a result, group sizes differ by no more than one person.

What “balanced” means

Balance refers only to headcount. The tool does not know roles, skills, availability, preferences, or previous pairings unless you account for them after the draw.

When numbers do not divide evenly

Extra participants are assigned one at a time to the first groups. For example, ten people across three groups produces sizes of four, three, and three.

Practical tips for better results

  • Check that the group count is practical for the available rooms or facilitators.
  • Add role labels to names if you plan to inspect skill coverage afterward.
  • Avoid repeatedly redrawing simply because the first fair result is inconvenient.
  • For sensitive assignments, explain permitted swaps before generating groups.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Random Group Maker create equal-size teams?

It creates the most even sizes possible. If the participant count is not divisible by the group count, some teams will have one additional person.

Can it balance teams by skill or role?

No. It randomizes people and balances headcount only. Review the output if each group needs a particular role, accessibility arrangement, or experience mix.

Can I remake the groups?

Yes. Select Remake groups to create a new independent split from the current participant list.
