Audio Inspector guide

Audio Inspector decodes an audio file and summarizes both its file metadata and its raw sample signal.

Your input is processed in the current browser tab and is not sent to the application server.

Why use this tool?

  • Finish a focused task without installing another app.
  • Adjust the result interactively before you copy, save, or use it.
  • Keep source data and files on this device while you work.

Common use cases

  • Checking sample rate and channel count
  • Spotting a very quiet or clipped recording
  • Reviewing the overall waveform before editing

How to use it

  1. 1

    Choose a browser-decodable audio file.

  2. 2

Review file and decoded stream details.

  3. 3

Compare peak and RMS signal levels.

  4. 4

Inspect the waveform for silence and large transients.

Peak and RMS

Peak is the loudest absolute sample. RMS represents average signal energy across every decoded channel.

Codec support

The MIME type comes from the file, while duration, sample rate, channels, and levels come from browser-decoded samples.

Safety limits

Files and decoded PCM are limited by size and duration to protect browser memory.

Practical tips for better results

  • A peak near 0 dBFS can indicate little remaining headroom.
  • RMS is not the same as perceived loudness or LUFS.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Audio Inspector upload my input?

No. The work happens locally in the current browser tab. Closing or refreshing the page clears temporary input unless you save the result yourself.

Can results differ in another browser or device?

They can. Browser engines, display settings, hardware capabilities, and supported file formats may affect the final result.
