Controls and results explained

Mouse test pad

Move, click, and scroll inside the large test area. Right-click menus and standard back/forward navigation are suppressed there so those buttons can be counted without leaving the page.

Left, middle, and right

Each card shows whether the button is currently held and how many presses registered. A deliberate single press should increase only its own count by one.

Back and forward buttons

These cards cover the common thumb buttons numbered 3 and 4 by the browser. Driver remapping or vendor software may intercept them before the page receives an event.

Scroll wheel results

Scroll events counts wheel messages; Last direction reports up, down, left, or right; Vertical and Horizontal totals accumulate browser-reported movement in pixels. Trackpads can produce many small events.

Pointer position and type

Position is measured relative to the test pad. Pointer type identifies mouse, touch, or pen as reported by the browser, which can help explain different trackpad or stylus behavior.

Estimated report rate

This estimates how frequently pointer-move events reach the page. Because browsers may combine events around the display refresh rate, it is suitable for spotting stutter but not certifying a mouse's advertised polling rate.

Double-click interval and warning

The interval is the time between two left-button presses. Extremely close unsolicited presses can trigger the switch-bounce warning; repeat the test slowly to distinguish a fault from an intentional double click.

Reset

Reset clears all click counts, scroll totals, movement readings, timing, and warnings so you can retest after changing a cable, USB port, battery, or system setting.

Detecting a failing switch

A worn micro-switch sends two presses from one physical click. If a single click raises the count by two, or the interval reads only a few milliseconds, the switch is bouncing and the mouse needs repair or replacement.

Report rate is an estimate

The rate is inferred from how often the browser delivers pointer events. Browsers coalesce events to the display refresh rate, so a 1000 Hz gaming mouse will usually read close to your monitor refresh rate rather than 1000.

Blocked browser actions

Inside the test pad the right-click menu and the back and forward side buttons are suppressed so those presses can be counted instead of navigating away.

Practical tips for better results

  • Side buttons only appear if your mouse has them and the browser exposes them; some are handled by driver software instead.
  • A typical system double-click window is around 500 ms, so a comfortable double click lands well inside that.
  • Trackpads report as pointer type "touch" or "mouse" depending on the driver.

Frequently asked questions

Why does one click count as two?

That is the classic sign of a worn switch inside the mouse. The contacts bounce and send a second press within a few milliseconds. It is a hardware fault, not a browser setting.

Why is my report rate lower than my mouse advertises?

Browsers group pointer events to the display refresh rate, so a high-polling-rate mouse will read close to your monitor refresh rate. The figure is useful for spotting stutter, not for verifying a polling-rate specification.

My side buttons do nothing. Is the mouse faulty?

Not necessarily. Many mice map their side buttons in driver software rather than sending standard button events, so the browser never sees them.
