Controls and results explained

Start, Stop, and Test again

Start speed test runs the complete sequence, Stop ends an active measurement, and Test again replaces the current result with a new run. Keep the tab visible and the connection otherwise quiet for the fairest comparison.

Download speed (Mbps)

Measures how quickly this device receives data. It most directly affects large downloads, high-resolution streaming, and how quickly web content loads; shared activity can lower the result.

Upload speed (Mbps)

Measures how quickly this device sends data. Upload capacity matters for video calls, cloud backups, livestreaming, and sharing large files, and is commonly lower than download on home plans.

Idle latency

The round-trip delay in milliseconds while the connection is not under load. Lower is better for voice, video, remote desktops, and online games; physical distance and network routing set a practical floor.

Jitter

The variation between latency samples. A connection can have good average latency but still sound choppy when jitter is high because voice and video packets arrive unevenly.

Packet loss

The percentage of measurement messages that never arrive. Ideally it is 0%; even modest persistent loss can cause frozen video, robotic audio, game teleporting, and retransmissions.

Latency under load and bufferbloat

Loaded latency measures delay while transfers fill the connection. The increase over idle is graded as bufferbloat and explains why a fast line may lag whenever someone downloads or uploads heavily.

How it is measured

This tool runs Cloudflare's official open-source speed test engine, which times transfers against their global edge network using the browser's own PerformanceResourceTiming data. That measures the bytes the network actually moved rather than relying on a script's own stopwatch.

Where the data goes

Unlike the other tools here, a speed test has to use the network. Random bytes are exchanged with Cloudflare's public measurement endpoints, and packet loss uses a short WebRTC relay connection. No page content, files, or personal data are sent, and result reporting back to Cloudflare is switched off.

Why your result varies

Wi-Fi signal strength, other devices on the same connection, VPNs, the time of day, and the distance to the nearest edge location all move the number. Run the test a few times to get a fair picture.

Practical tips for better results

  • Test over a wired connection if you can — it separates a slow line from a weak Wi-Fi signal.
  • Ad blockers and privacy extensions sometimes block the measurement requests, which makes the test fail.
  • Upload speed is usually much lower than download on home broadband, which is normal.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my result lower than the speed I pay for?

Advertised speeds are the maximum to your router. Wi-Fi, older devices, a busy network, and VPNs all reduce what a single device sees. A wired test with nothing else running gives the closest comparison.

What is bufferbloat and why does it matter?

Bufferbloat is latency rising sharply while the connection is busy. It is why a video call breaks up the moment someone starts a large download, even on a fast line. The test compares idle latency with latency under load to measure it.

What counts as good latency?

Under 30 ms is excellent, under 60 ms is comfortable for gaming and calls, and above 150 ms makes real-time conversation feel awkward. Jitter above roughly 30 ms causes call audio to break up even when speed is high.

Does this test use my data allowance?

Yes. A full test transfers roughly a hundred megabytes on a fast connection, and less on a slow one because the engine scales the payload to your line. On a metered or mobile connection, use it sparingly.
