Controls and results explained
Start test and permission
Start microphone test asks the browser for microphone access. Choose Allow to activate the live meter. If access was denied earlier, reopen this site's permission settings and allow the microphone before trying again.
Live level and history
The main bar shows your current average volume, the peak marker shows the loudest recent moment, and the small history graph makes dropouts or sudden spikes easier to see while you speak.
Average and peak dB
Average level represents sustained loudness; peak level catches short loud sounds. A healthy voice should move clearly without repeatedly hitting the far-right clipping range.
Sample rate and active input
Sample rate reports how often the browser samples the signal, while Active input names the track being tested. These fields are useful when documenting an audio problem for support.
Microphone selector
Use the Input device menu to switch between the built-in microphone, a headset, webcam, audio interface, or other input. The live test restarts on the selected device so you can compare them directly.
Record, playback, and clear
Record a clip captures up to 15 seconds. Stop recording ends it early, the audio player lets you listen back, and Clear clip removes the temporary recording from the page.
Stop test
Stop test releases the microphone immediately and turns off the browser's active microphone indicator. Refreshing or closing the page also ends access and discards the temporary clip.
What the meter shows
The filled bar is the average (RMS) level and the thin marker is the recent peak. Comfortable speech sits in the middle of the bar. A meter that reaches the far right is clipping and will sound distorted.
Processing is disabled
Echo cancellation, noise suppression, and automatic gain control are turned off so you hear the raw microphone rather than the browser's cleaned-up version of it.
Nothing leaves your device
The live level and any clip you record are held in this browser tab only. Closing or refreshing the page discards them.
Practical tips for better results
- If the meter stays flat, check that the microphone is unmuted in your operating system and that the correct device is selected here.
- Device names only appear after you allow access — before that the browser hides them.
- A physical mute switch on a headset cannot be detected by the browser; check it by hand.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my microphone show no name?
Browsers hide device labels until you grant microphone access at least once. Start the test and allow access, and the real names appear.
The test works here but not in my meeting app. Why?
Each app has its own input selection and permissions. A working test here proves the hardware and the browser are fine, so check the device selection and permissions inside that app.
Is my recording uploaded anywhere?
No. The clip is created in your browser and played back from memory. It is discarded when you clear it or leave the page.
